US Government Supports SaaS

13th Oct 2009

Led by the country's chief information officer, Vivek Kundra, the acceptance of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and cloud computing initiatives by the U.S. government has surprised even technology experts.

Jeffrey Kaplan of E-Commerce Times reported that he was surprised by the government's willingness to adapt cloud computing technologies, as the government has the stereotype of being "notoriously resistant to change."

Instead, CIO Vivek Kundra has made cloud computing a priority.

"I'm all about the cloud computing notion," he told the Wall Street Journal. "I am killing projects that don’t investigate software as a service first."

Kaplan discussed a variety of recent government cloud computing initiatives, including RightNow Technologies' secure hosting capabilities designed to meet Department of Defense regulations, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's working definition of cloud computing.

He also discussed the cloud computing success of California Secretary of State Debra Brown, who used Amazon Web Services to support a temporary website for local election results - an expense that cost only $7, as opposed to the thousands of dollars it would have cost for an on-premise server.

Other recent government cloud computing projects include initiatives from the U.S. Army and Navy, as well as a Request for Quotation from the General Service Administration regarding an Infrastructure-as-a-Service initiative. Source EDL Consulting
